Description

We offer this unique hand-carved Bali, Indonesia dowry chest dating back to approximately 1840.  A dowry is a payment, such as property or money, paid by the bride’s family to the groom or his family at the time of marriage. This chest is 36″ long x 16″ wide &  30 1/2″ tall. Most of the color is gone after 175 years. Some white, green, and deep blue/black patches are still visible, giving a hint to its original colorful glory. There are definite age cracks in this chest and you can see areas of more modern era repair work.  Both sides of this chest open up. You can see the mortise and tenon joints in the main box area.  It is interesting to note that one side of this chest’s lid was carved of repurposed wood by the maker as you’ll see areas on the back that once held large hinges (also hand-carved in).  Please see photos for more detail.

Please note that there is NO SHIPPING for this item.  It is LOCAL PICK UP ONLY.
