The clasp that holds the base tin closed with the lid is in the shape of a WHEATSHEAF which was a well known CWS Logo. On the base of the tin. which is mounted on four round ball feet, is printed Information and statistical data about the CWS. On the two short panels are views of the NEWCASTLE BRANCH and the LONDON BRANCH. On the other long panel is printed two works. BISCUIT & Sweet Works CRUMPSALL , MANCHESTER and SOAP , glycerine, Candle Starch, & Blue Works & Lard Refinery , IRLAM near MANCHESTER. In 1913 the CWS had 64 Factories and 21,500 employees .

The first Co-operative was opened by the Rochdale Pioneers in Lancashire England in 1843 . In 1863 , twenty years after the Rochdale Pioneers opened their co-operative, the North of England Co-operative Society was launched by 300 individual co-ops across Yorkshire and Lancashire . By 1872 , it had become known as the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS).

The tin measures 10 3/8″ long x 7 1/2″ wide x 6″ tall. There is some rust and wear on the tin along with some dents. It is also missing the handles on the side although the slots that hold the handles are still there. One of the legs on the bottom is partially broken off and is shown in the pictures. Taking into consideration the age, use and historical interest associated with this tin it would make an interesting addition to a collection or archive. Please view pictures for more details.
