Lee Mero Early Work Cubist Abstract Asian Tile Hug Embrace Swan Water Framed L5Z
For your consideration is this framed and matted Lee Mero Abstract Enamel on Tile painting. This piece was probably done during Mero’s early years of work when he experimented with Cubism during the 1910’s. This Asian-influenced abstract features two people embracing near the water. One can see the swan on the right along with lily pads on the left. The tile is double matted with a thin black, then wider textured cream. The black frame has an inner rim of gold. The tile itself measures 7 3/4″ square. The frame is 14 3/8″ square. One panel shows a crack in the white enamel (right side). While Minneapolis, Minnesota artist Lee Mero (1885-1977) is most famous for his later advertisements (he briefly worked for Coca Cola), illustrations, and Christmas cards, this unique piece shows insight into his years at art school both in Minneapolis and in New York. Mero is a listed artist in the 2009/2010 Davenport’s Art Reference & Price Guide.
