Description

For your consideration is this wonderful antique tyg. For those unaware of what a tyg is, it is a large English pottery mug with three or more handles dividing the rim into sections for several drinkers. Each drinker in the circle (presumably around a fire) wouldn’t have to turn the vessel, just hand it to the next person. This worked well for hot drinks. This particular piece was produced by Copeland Spode and is circa 1891 as the RD# is 180288.

This tyg is made of a brownish pottery and has several Greek scenes around the body. They are done in a Jasperware style fashion with a green background. This piece is in overall good condition for its age but does have a few imperfections. One of the handles has been professionally repaired, and there is also a professionally repaired chip on the top lip. There is a repair on the head of one of the people in the Greek scene, and there are a few other areas where it looks like some of the white portions may have broken off at one point (please see photos).
This is still a very nice piece and would make a great addition to someone’s collection!
